Dark matches that didn’t air on the broadcast were: The Barbarian going to a 15-Minute Time Limit Draw with Ron Bass, Baron von Raschke pinning The Italian Stallion with the claw, and Jimmy Valiant defeating Arn Anderson (with JJ Dillon) by Disqualification when Dillon interfered.
Magnum TA and Linda Curry were the WTBS hosts. David Crockett and Tony Schiavone were the broadcast team. Tom Miller was the ring announcer.
Tony Schiavone tells us since it’s TV, all of the matches are 1-Fall with 20-Minute Time Limits accept for the NWA World Title main event which will be under “television time remaining”. He said this was a special edition of World Championship Wrestling.
Jim Cornette was in the ring to rudely take over for Tom Miller so he could introduce The Midnight Express himself.
The Midnight Express (Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton with Jim Cornette) defeated NWA World Tag Team Champions The Rock and Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) to win the titles when Eaton pinned Morton after Condrey hit Morton in the head with Cornette’s tennis racket during a referee bump with less than 3-Minutes left in the time limit. Morton and Gibson were able to give a double dropkick to both Condrey and Eaton, but referee Pee Wee Anderson got knocked out of the ring in the middle of all of that action. Cornette got in the ring to interfere while Anderson was knocked out on the floor. Anderson eventually recovered and made the three count.
The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal with Paul Ellering) defeated Ivan Koloff and Nikita Koloff by Disqualification when Baron von Raschke interfered and attacked The Road Warriors in 6:56. Ellering made the save and helped his team fight the heels off by using their own chain against them. Tom Miller introduced The Koloffs as 2/3 of the NWA World 6-Man Tag Team Champions. Baron von Raschke was their champion tag partner during this time. He replaced Krusher Khruschev under “Freebird Rules” because Khrushchev was injured.
Magnum TA interviewed Benjamin “Benny” Parsons about car racing. It was to promote a racing event that would air in the coming weeks on WTBS with Parsons as one of the announcers.
They showed a video “on location” in Arizona. Dusty Rhodes was filming a cameo role in a remake of the western movie Stagecoach starring Willie Nelson. Tony Schiavone caught up with both of them for an interview. The movie aired on CBS later that year. Rhodes said Nelson was an inspiration to him because he’s always listened to his music a lot while on the road in his wrestling career. They said they see each other a few times during the year. Rhodes said he sees Nelson on New Year’s Eve and Nelson is usually “glossy eyed”. Nelson plugged his new album “The Promiseland.”
NWA National Champion Dusty Rhodes (with Baby Doll) went to a 20-Minute Time Limit Draw with Tully Blanchard (with JJ Dillon). Dillon distracted Rhodes after the match to allow Blanchard to jump Rhodes and give him a piledriver. Blanchard took the title belt and walked back to the locker room as Dillon quickly followed him.
Magnum TA interviewed Jim Crockett Jr. Magnum said 1985 was a great year for Jim Crockett Promotions. They said the first annual Bunkhouse Stampede really stood out over everything else. Crockett said it took ten days but they found out who the toughest of the bunch was (they never said who it was but it was Dusty Rhodes who won every Bunkhouse Stampede Finals they ever did from 1985 to 1988). They talked about the first Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament coming up. They showed a taped interview with Joel Watts talking to Bob Johnson, the Executive VP of The Superdome, about The Crockett Cup being there.
Gaylord Perry was brought out as a special guest to promote the Atlanta Braves being on WTBS during the baseball season.
NWA World Champion Ric Flair pinned Ron Garvin after a running knee to the back but Garvin’s foot was on the ropes during the count in 14:38. Referee Tommy Young was accidentally bumped several seconds before the finish and he was still too “dazed” to see what had happened as he made the count.
Ron Garvin would chase Ric Flair for the NWA World Title for a long time. He would finally win it in Detroit, Michigan at Joe Louis Arena in a steel cage match in September 1987 with a sunset flip off the ropes to get the pin. Flair would win it back from him in another steel cage match at NWA Starrcade 1987 in Chicago which was the first ever NWA pay-per-view. Flair gave him a flapjack type of move face first into the cage and then pinned him.
