WWF Wrestling Challenge Results From January 1987
WWF Wrestling Challenge results airing in syndication on January 31, 1987. Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, and Luscious Johnny V were the broadcast team. Mel Phillips was the ring announcer. The Federetts were at ringside.
“King” Harley Race (with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan) pinned Koko B. Ware (with Frankie) after Heenan pushed Ware off of the top rope in 2:08. Danny Davis was the referee and he allowed himself to be “distracted” by Race while Heenan interfered. Race crawled on top of Ware for the pin cover as Davis made a very fast three count. During the commentary, Monsoon questioned the actions of Davis as of late and said he was disgusting after this match was done. Johnny V made excuses and said Davis was probably distracted by Frankie squawking at ringside. Junkyard Dog ran in the ring and went over to check on Ware. Davis bullied JYD around and wanted him to leave the ring. JYD argued with him and then gave him a hip toss. Johnny V said JYD needed to be suspended for putting his hands on a referee.
Blackjack Mulligan was in the Wrestlers’ Rebuttal segment reading the WWF Magazine with WWF Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage on the cover of it. He was really brief and said the magazine is the hottest selling magazine in Texas and the whole world so we’d better get one.
A graphic appeared on screen showing WrestleMania III is coming up on March, 29, 1987.
Hercules (with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan) defeated Don Driggers by referee stoppage with the Full Nelson in just 49-Seconds. At the start of the match, the picture-in-picture promo box appeared in the upper left corner of the screen. It was WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan responding to a question about Hercules. Hogan said Hercules has the power and strength from the heavens that has even taken him to the limits before. After this match ended, Billy Jack Haynes came out to ringside for his match that was coming up next and he confronted Hercules. Heenan literally pulled Hercules away from Haynes with the steel chain when Hercules tried to go after Haynes. Monsoon said Heenan was a coward for pulling him away. Johnny V said this was not the right time because Hercules just wrestled a big match. Monsoon scoffed at those comments.
Ken Resnick interviewed George “The Animal” Steele backstage about Randy Savage and Elizabeth. Steele spoke in his usual broken English ways. He said Savage hurt him so now he will hurt Savage and take Elizabeth away from him. He said Elizabeth sould stop managing Savage and manage him instead after he wins the WWE IC Title.
Billy Jack Haynes defeated Jimmy Jack Funk by submission with a Full Nelson set up by an atomic drop in 2:08. Hercules and Heenan watched the match from ringside to scout Haynes close up. Haynes invited Hercules to come into the ring afterwards but Heenan kept holding Hercules back.
Resnick interviewed The Honkey Tonk Man and Jimmy Hart backstage. HTM said he thought he could trust Hulk Hogan because he thought he was his friend. He said Hogan and everyone else is jealous of him and Hart.
Rick Martel and Tom Zenk were shown in the locker room having a friendly discussion about if America or Canada has the better nightlife and vacation spots.
Bobby Heenan finally returned to the broadcast position since the episode’s opening greeting where the broadcast team is always shown on camera. Monsoon said Heenan was disgusting. Heenan played innocent and said “What did I do?” Monsoon pointed out the interference in Koko B. Ware’s match. Heenan said Ware was calling him names that he couldn’t repeat so he pushed him.
The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart) and Adorable Adrian Adonis (with Jimmy Hart) defeated Jim Parks, Paul Roma, and Tony Garea by referee stoppage when Adonis used Goodnight Irene on Parks in 2:03.
There was a Piper’s Pit segment with Jesse “The Body” Ventura as “Rowdy” Roddy Piper’s guest. Ventura said there’s something going on between Andre The Giant and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan but they’re supposed to be enemies. Piper still had the award trophies on the Piper’s Pit set that were given to Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant separately by WWF president Jack Tunney the last couple of weeks on the segment. Ventura said it was odd that Hogan’s trophy was much bigger and taller than Andre’s. He said Andre hasn’t been beaten in 15 years but Hogan has ducked a lot of people in his few years as the WWF World Heavyweight Champion. Piper said he’s wrestled both Hogan and Andre and he can assure everyone that Hogan deserves this trophy. They argued about it. Ventura wanted to fight Piper in the ring over it and Piper was ready to go at him. Ventura then said he had a better idea. Next week he will bring Andre to talk about all of this and he asked if Piper could bring Hogan along as well next week. Piper said “You betcha!” Ventura said they all needed to have a face to face in the same place next week.
Referee Danny Davis was shown in the locker room. He said he wanted JYD fined and suspended for what happened earlier in the show. On commentary, Monsoon said Davis should be the one fined and suspended. Heenan said JYD obviously has no respect for authority.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts (with Damien) pinned Gary Starr after the DDT in just 27-Seconds. Roberts poured Damien over Starr after the match.
Another graphic for WrestleMania III appeared on screen.
Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik (with Slick) defeated The Islanders (Haku and Tama) when Sheik pinned Tama after Slick hit Tama with the cane in 2:00. During the match, Heenan asked Monsoon what the main event of WrestleMania III will be and he wanted to know where WrestleMania III will even be. Monsoon snapped at him and said nobody has been told any information yet other than the date.
Resnick interviewed Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat backstage. He said Steamboat was back in the WWF after being injured by Randy Savage with the ring bell. Steamboat was talking softly to continue to sell the injury. George “The Animal” Steele was brought back in for further comments about Savage.
Gorilla Monsoon went backstage and interviewed Andre The Giant really quick to see if he would meet Hulk Hogan next week. Andre pointed to the camera and simply said “I’ll be there!”
Bobby Heenan closed the episode by himself. He gave the rundown of what we’ll see on WWF Wrestling Challenge for next week. Another reminder for Andre and Hogan in a special edition of Piper’s Pit. Scheduled to be in action: Tito Santana, Randy Savage, Koko B. Ware vs. Race in a rematch, and “The Natural” Butch Reed in action.
